So tonight, we are talking about Some ways to help families who Are struggling in that area. We have Ken Riley on. Talk about the wonderful guest, Trish, who we have to answer Questions about helping folks Who are in that position, who Could be facing foreclosure.
> Trisha, what she will talk to Us about is something that’s Become a crisis in our country, But also in our area. And she wants to talk to Everyone out there that’s having Foreclosure problems. We were talking before we came On tv tonight about how Important it is to get to Someone early; because what Happens, and we were talking About it, is once somebody gets Behind, they get behind one Payment, two payments or three. Well, you can do something. You could — doesn’t have to be A disaster, but you have to talk With somebody. You can’t ignore the problem. That’s what trish is here to Talk about, about how to access All the resources that you have Put together to solve these Problems.
>> Right. Thank you for letting me be here Tonight. United Way has been around for a Long time. We have accumulated a lot of Partners. One thing we did for Foreclosures, we have 23 Partners across the state that Are on, just ready to help People; but what we found is 3 People don’t know where to turn For help. All you’ve got to do is dial 211. If you pick up your phone, you Can save your home. You call 211, and we will Connect you to one of the Partners that are ready to help You, whether you need counseling Or legal advice.
>> Tiffany Bittner: 211. We have a question or comment. Let’s welcome timothy. I am told we lost him. So you talked about the number, And mentioned the services. Obviously, folks are in a Situation where they could be Facing a foreclosure. So what are the qualifications?
> Well, we know that what Happens with foreclosure, it is Usually brought about by a Catastrophic event, either a job Loss or medical crisis. So it doesn’t matter what your Income is. You are a household in need. That’s why the partners said Let’s have that one Easy-to-remember phone call. Each year — most people don’t Know this, but for the line, we Got 27,000 phone calls last Year. Primarily people call because They need help with housing, With clothing or food. So we can help families. We have over 800 resources in That database. And most of them are free. We have people that will ask a Few questions. It is all confidential. If you are one or two mortgage Payments behind, the time to Call is now. We could hook you up. 4
>> Tell our viewers about the Scams, where people send money Outside the state and never hear From somebody.
>> Yeah. It’s unfortunate that when a Family is at its most vulnerable Is when they had one of these Losses. So what we have is families that Are desperate. We also know that no one goes Through foreclosure more than Once. Usually, you don’t know what you Are doing, don’t know where to Turn. You have nowhere to turn for Help. You were in pretty good shape Before you were — if you were Able to get a loan, own a home, Things must have been going Smoothly. All of a sudden, it is yanked Out from under you and begins to Spiral really fast. So you are desperate. So if someone calls you, because It is easy to track foreclosures By announcements in the Newspaper and that sort of Thing; you get a phone call or Letter from someone that says we Can stop the foreclosure. And we had instances where our Volunteer lawyers had families That sent 3,000 out of state, And never heard from those People again. So United Way is one trusted Agency. We have 22 more that we can Connect you to, that want to Help you and are going to have Your best interest at heart. Most of these services are free.
>> Tiffany Bittner: thanks for Coming and sharing that 211 Number and information. 5 Hopefully, it will be a great Service to our viewers that can Use that. We’ll take a break. But that’s something, if you Came on a Monday or Thursday, we Could have a lawyer make some Phone calls on your behalf, Maybe write some letters and Figure out what is going on with Your particular situation.
> Tiffany Bittner: and that’s Something you do, right? The basic, everyday person that Walks in, with the problems that You help out.
> Yeah. A lot of times, having just that Lawyer make the phone call, it Might be something that you had Thought of yourself, but when You have a lawyer do it, it Carries a little more weight. And we are more than happy to do That for people.
> A lot of times, are you able To fix the problem right then And there? You don’t have to wait weeks and Weeks?
> Yes. That is that beauty of the Birmingham bar volunteers lawyer Program, having so many Committed attorneys that want to Volunteer. We can provide instant help, Which is such peace of mind. It allows you to go on with your Life. These are seemingly small Problems when you look at them on paper, but to the person that Is experiencing them, they are Huge.
